FACT SHEETWHAT: The 2nd Annual Southwest Missouri Kidney Walk is a fundraiser designed to raise both awareness and dollars for the fight against kidney disease. All walkers are encouraged to raise as much money as possible from family, friends, co-workers and business associates in support of their participation in the Walk. WHY: 26 million American adults have chronic kidney disease and another 20 million are at risk. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Kidney Walk presents an occasion for dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients, donor families, living donors, the medical communities, and the general public to celebrate LIFE and support the Foundation's mission. WHEN: Saturday, May 30, 2009 Check in: 9:00 AM; Start time: 10:00 AM WHERE: Phelps Grove Park, 950 E. Bennett, Springfield, MO HOW: Register for the Walk online at www.kidneywalk.org or by phone at 417-881-8602. Everyone is welcome to participate! TEAMS: Form a team! Support These Local Programs:EARLY INTERVENTION: Screening and personal follow-up by a health care professional and education services to populations identified at risk of chronic kidney disease. Of those screened to date, 53% have been identified as having one or more high risk factors. One in nine adults in the U.S. is at risk for kidney disease. CAMP ChiMer: Partnered with Children’s Mercy Hospital, Camp ChiMer provides a week-long summer camp free of charge to children ages 9-17 who are on dialysis or who have had a kidney transplant. KID POWER: a 13-week motivational challenge program focusing on healthy lifestyles for children ages 9-13 (tweens). The program consists of a Challenge Calendar, healthy eating and exercise curriculum, and cooking demonstrations and is implemented in middle schools and community programs. PATIENT SERVICES: Provides nutritional support to patients who meet guidelines established for financial and nutritional risk; Grants to patients to provide emergency relief for rent, utilities, food, prescriptions and transportation; Life-saving jewelry is distributed to transplant recipients and dialysis patients. |
